Shaanxi History Museum (陕西历史博物馆) tickets are among the hardest free tickets to book in China. Most visitors don't fail because tickets sell out. They fail because they misunderstand how the system works. This guide covers 5 ways to get in, insider booking tactics, and what to do if you fail.
Very hard. Tickets release 5 days in advance at 17:00 and often sell out by 17:02. Summer and holidays are the worst.
Saving a visit plan is not booking. Many people fill in their details, save the plan, and think they are done. You must click the "预约" (Book) button after 17:00 to complete the booking.
You have 4 backup options: buy a paid exhibition ticket (270–300 RMB), book the Qin Han Hall (easier), join a guided tour package (20–40 RMB), or visit a backup museum like Xi'an Museum or Shaanxi Archaeology Museum.
| Option | Cost | Booking Difficulty | Content Value | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free main hall ticket | Free | Very high | Full collection | Everyone willing to compete |
| Paid exhibition ticket | 270–300 RMB | High | Full + mural hall | Mural enthusiasts or repeat visitors |
| Qin Han Hall | Free | Low | Qin-Han dynasty focus | Visitors with extra time |
| Guided tour package | 20–40 RMB | Medium | Full + guided explanation | First-time visitors |
| Backup museum | Free or low | Very low | Different themes | Visitors who fail to book |
Try for the free main hall ticket first. It is the best value and covers the museum's core collection. If you fail, the guided tour package is the best backup, it costs little and includes a professional guide. Avoid the paid exhibition ticket unless you specifically want the mural hall.
This is the main goal for most visitors. It is free, covers the basic exhibition and the Hejiacun Treasure (大唐遗宝) exhibition, and gives you access to the museum's 370,000+ artifacts.

Do not enter the countdown page early. Wait until 17:00, then enter.
At 17:00, the "预约" button may appear gray. Do not panic. Exit and re-enter the page repeatedly until the button turns clickable.
If you see "已约满" (sold out) at 17:00, wait until 17:02. Many users report that a fresh wave of tickets appears around 17:02. Keep refreshing.
If you see "正在加载" (loading) or a queue message, do not exit. Stay on the page. This often means you are getting through. Wait a few minutes, then check "订单查询" (Order Inquiry) to confirm.
Use mobile data, not WiFi. Multiple users report better success with 5G.
Try the afternoon slots first. They are slightly less competitive than morning slots.
If you fail at 17:00, try again at 18:00–19:00. This is when people who failed to confirm their bookings release their tickets back into the pool.
Use multiple devices. Have friends or family try on their own phones at the same time. Each ID can only be used on one device at a time.
Move to one of the backup options below.
The Tang Dynasty Mural Hall (唐代壁画珍品馆) costs 270 RMB per person (130 RMB for students). The Tang Tomb Mural Hall (唐墓壁画馆) costs 300 RMB per person.
Pros: You get access to the main hall plus the mural exhibition. Booking competition is slightly lower than the free ticket.
Cons: 270–300 RMB is expensive for a single museum. Only worth it if you specifically want to see the murals.
How to book: Same WeChat account. Select the paid ticket option during booking.
TripChina Verdict: Skip this unless you are a mural enthusiast or a repeat visitor. For 270 RMB, you could visit two other museums.
The Qin Han Hall (秦汉馆) is a separate building in Xianyang (咸阳), about 40 minutes from the main hall by car. It focuses on Qin and Han dynasty artifacts.
Pros: Free. Much easier to book. Less crowded.
Cons: Far from central Xi'an. The collection is narrower, only Qin and Han periods. The building itself is less impressive.
Booking: Same WeChat account. Select "秦汉馆" instead of "本馆". Release time is 17:30, 5 days in advance.
Address: East Section of Lanchi Third Road, Qinhan New City, Xixian New Area (西咸新区秦汉新城兰池三路东段).
Transport: You will need to drive or take a taxi. No direct metro.
TripChina Verdict: Only go here if you have extra time and cannot get main hall tickets. It is a solid museum, but not a replacement for the main hall.
Some tour operators and the museum itself offer guided tour packages that include entry. Prices start at 20–40 RMB per person for group tours (minimum 20 people) and 300 RMB for private tours (1–10 people).
Pros: You get a guaranteed entry slot plus a professional guide. The group tour is very affordable.
Cons: You must join a group. You cannot wander freely. Availability is limited.
How to book: Check the museum's official WeChat account or ask at the entrance. Some third-party platforms also sell these packages.
TripChina Verdict: This is the best backup option. For 20–40 RMB, you solve the ticket problem and get a guided experience.
If you cannot get into Shaanxi History Museum at all, do not waste your day. Xi'an has two excellent backup museums.
TripChina Verdict: Xi'an Museum is the better backup, it is central, free, and covers similar periods. Shaanxi Archaeology Museum is worth it if you are interested in archaeology as a field.
Shaanxi History Museum is not just a museum, it is Xi'an's cultural crown jewel. With 370,000+ artifacts, including the Hejiacun Treasure and the Tang Dynasty murals, it draws massive demand. The free ticket policy makes it even more competitive.
The system is designed to prevent scalping, but it also creates friction for genuine visitors. The key is to understand the flow: pre-fill your info, save the plan, then click "预约" at exactly 17:00. Most failures come from skipping that last step.
There is no air conditioning inside the main hall. Summer visits can be hot and stuffy. Bring a fan, cooling patches, and water.
Large luggage, knives, lighters, selfie sticks, tripods, and hiking poles are not allowed.
No. Saving a visit plan only pre-fills your information. You must click the "预约" button after 17:00 to complete the booking.
The system releases tickets in waves. The first wave at 17:00 is small. A larger wave appears around 17:02. Keep refreshing.
No. The museum strictly enforces time slots. You must arrive during your booked slot.
Children under 1.4 meters tall or under 6 years old do not need a ticket. One adult can bring up to two children. Children aged 6–14 must be booked together with an adult.
Seniors aged 65+ can enter without a booking. Bring your original ID card and enter directly. If you have a senior card, go to the service window first.
No. They are separate buildings with separate tickets. Book the correct one.
If you do not cancel before the last entry time, it counts as a no-show. Three no-shows will block you from booking for 90 days (some sources say 180 days). Cancel through the "订单查询" (Order Inquiry) page.
No. The main hall does not have air conditioning. Bring a fan and water.
Yes, but it must be stored in the lockers before entry. Large luggage is not allowed inside.
Xi'an Museum (西安博物院) and Shaanxi Archaeology Museum (陕西考古博物馆) are excellent backups. Both are free and much easier to book.
