Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding（成都大熊猫繁育研究基地 ）— The Famous One

Direct answer: For most first-time visitors to Chengdu with limited time, this base offers the most pandas in the shortest travel time from the city center. But you must arrive early — before 7:30am — to avoid the worst crowds.

The base is divided into an old section (South Gate) and a new section (West Gate). The South Gate is where most people enter, and it is closer to the popular panda cub areas and Hua Hua’s enclosure. The West Gate is newer, less crowded, and has a different set of pandas.

Transport: Take metro line 3 to Panda Avenue station (熊猫大道站), exit A, then take bus 408. Or take the direct shuttle from Chunxi Road or Kuanzhai Alley.

Honest take: The base is huge. Walking from one end to the other takes about 5 hours. The shuttle bus (30 yuan, unlimited rides) helps, but the queues for the bus can be long during peak times. I would not recommend this base for anyone with low patience for crowds.

Dujiangyan Panda Valley（熊猫谷） — The Quiet One

This is my personal favorite. It is smaller, quieter, and the pandas are more active because the environment is more natural.

Direct answer: If you want a relaxed panda experience without the crowds, Dujiangyan Panda Valley is the best choice. It has fewer pandas (about 20), but you can get much closer to them.

The valley is set in a natural hillside environment. The pandas here are part of a semi-wild training program, so they behave more naturally. There is also a red panda (lesser panda) area where the animals roam freely — I once had a red panda walk within two meters of me on the path.

Transport: Take the high-speed train from Xipu station to Dujiangyan station (30 minutes, 10 yuan), then take a taxi (15 minutes, about 15 yuan). Or take a direct shuttle from Chunxi Road or Kuanzhai Alley (40 yuan round trip, book one day ahead).

Honest take: The downside is the distance — it takes about 1.5 hours to get there from central Chengdu. But the trade-off is worth it for the quiet experience. I have been here four times and never had to queue for more than five minutes.

Dujiangyan China Giant Panda Park (Panda Paradise都江堰中华大熊猫苑) — The Rescue Center

This base is often confused with Panda Valley, but it is different. It is located closer to Qingcheng Mountain and serves as a rescue and disease prevention center.

Direct answer: This base is best for visitors who want to combine a panda visit with a trip to Qingcheng Mountain or Dujiangyan irrigation system. It has about 40 pandas and is the only base where you can volunteer to clean panda enclosures.

The park is compact — you can walk through it in about 1.5 hours. The pandas here tend to be older, but they are well-cared for and the viewing distance is very close.

Transport: Take the high-speed train from Xipu to Qingcheng Mountain station, then take a taxi (10 minutes). Or drive — it is about 1 hour from central Chengdu.

Tickets: 55 yuan for adults, 27 yuan for students. Book through the WeChat account “都江堰中华大熊猫苑” at least 3 days in advance.

Hours: 8:30am to 5:00pm (last entry at 4:30pm).

Best strategy: Visit in the morning, then head to Qingcheng Mountain or Dujiangyan in the afternoon. This is a good option for families with young children because the park is small and easy to navigate.

Honest take: The pandas here are less active than at other bases because many are older. If you want to see playful cubs, this is not the best choice. But if you want a quiet, educational visit, it works well.

Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base（卧龙中华大熊猫苑神树坪基地） — The Natural One

This is the base for serious panda fans. It is located in the Wolong Nature Reserve, about 130 kilometers from Chengdu, and sits at a higher altitude where the climate is cooler. 

Direct answer: If you want to see panda cubs in a natural mountain environment and don’t mind a longer journey, Wolong Shenshuping is the best base. It has about 60 pandas, many of them cubs, and the crowds are minimal. The base is built on a hillside with the enclosures concentrated in a small area. You can walk through the entire base in about 2 hours. The cub area is particularly good — I have seen groups of five or six cubs playing together, which you rarely see at the Chengdu base. 

Transport: Drive from Chengdu (about 2.5 hours) or take a direct shuttle from Chunxi Road (110 yuan round trip, departs at 7:00am, returns at 6:30pm). Public transport is limited. 

Tickets: 85 yuan for adults, 45 yuan for students. Book through the WeChat account “卧龙大熊猫苑神树坪基地” at least 7 days in advance. 

Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm (last entry at 4:30pm). 

Best strategy: This is a full-day trip. Leave Chengdu by 7:00am, arrive by 9:30am, spend 2-3 hours at the base, then drive back. The mountain scenery alone is worth the drive. 

Honest take: The road to Wolong can be winding and occasionally affected by weather. I would not recommend this for anyone prone to car sickness. But the pandas here are the most active I have seen anywhere.

Bifengxia Panda Base （雅安碧峰峡熊猫基地）— The Full Experience

This base is part of the larger Bifengxia scenic area, which includes a wildlife park and a峡谷 (gorge) hiking trail.

Direct answer: If you have two days and want a complete nature experience — pandas, wildlife, and hiking — Bifengxia is the best choice. It has about 70 pandas, including many returned from overseas.

The panda base is set in a forested valley. The enclosures are large and natural, and the pandas are often more active than at the city base. The wildlife park next door lets you feed animals, and the gorge has waterfalls and hiking trails.

Transport: Take the high-speed train from Chengdu West or East station to Ya’an station (1 hour), then take a bus or taxi to Bifengxia (30 minutes). Or drive from Chengdu (about 1.5 hours).

Tickets: 100 yuan for adults (includes panda base, wildlife park, and shuttle bus). Book through the WeChat account “碧峰峡景区” at least 3 days in advance.

Hours: 8:30am to 4:00pm (panda base closes at 5:00pm).

Best strategy: Spend one day at the panda base and wildlife park, and a second day hiking the gorge. Stay overnight at a nearby hotel.

Honest take: The panda base is spread out and requires some uphill walking. It is not ideal for visitors with mobility issues. But the combination of pandas and nature makes it a memorable trip.

Practical Tips That Actually Matter

Book tickets early. During Chinese holidays (Spring Festival, Labor Day, National Day), tickets for the Chengdu base sell out within hours of release. Set a reminder for 7 days before your visit.

Go early. Pandas are most active between 7:30am and 10:00am. After that, they sleep. If you arrive at noon, you will see sleeping pandas.

Bring your own food. Food at the bases is overpriced and mediocre. I always bring sandwiches and water.

Wear comfortable shoes. The Chengdu base is huge. Even with the shuttle bus, you will walk several kilometers.

Check the weather. Pandas are more active in cool weather. On hot days (above 25°C), they stay indoors with air conditioning.

Don’t expect to see Hua Hua easily. The queue for Hua Hua at the Chengdu base can be 2-3 hours. If you are not a superfan, skip it and see other pandas instead.
