I used to think 12306 was just a ticket-buying app. You search, you pay, you board. That was it.
Then I spent a year traveling through China by train — from Beijing to Chengdu, Shanghai to Kunming, and a dozen smaller cities in between. I learned the hard way that the app does a lot more than most people realize. I also learned that some of its best features are buried in menus most travelers never open.
Here are five 12306 features I now use regularly. Each one has saved me time, money, or a headache.
You can pre-order tickets for specific routes up to 15 days in advance, even before general sale opens.
I found this feature by accident. A friend told me she had “booked” her Spring Festival ticket a week before the official sale date. I didn’t believe her. Then I tried it myself.
In the 12306 app, go to the home screen and look for the “Book in Advance” option (it’s sometimes labeled as “预约” under a specific section). Enter your departure and destination. If the route is eligible, available trains will appear. You can select your preferred train and seat type, then submit the request.
Here’s the catch: not all routes support advance booking. The system only shows trains that are part of the advance booking program. If no trains appear, the route isn’t eligible. You’ll also need to wait for the system to confirm — it’s not an instant purchase. The confirmation usually comes a day or two before the official sale date.
I used this for a Spring Festival trip from Shanghai to Chengdu. The advance booking didn’t guarantee a ticket — my request was denied twice before it finally went through on the third try. But it worked, and I didn’t have to fight the general sale rush.
Verdict: Worth trying for high-demand routes during holidays. Not useful for regular travel.
The “Light Luggage” service lets you ship bags from your home to the station, or from the station to your destination.
This feature is called “轻装行” (Light Travel) in the app. It’s available at 111 stations across China as of early 2025.
To use it, open the 12306 app, go to the full services menu, and find “Light Luggage.” You can choose between door-to-station or station-to-door delivery. Fill in your pickup and drop-off addresses, and a courier will collect your bags and deliver them to the station or your destination.
I used this once when I had a connecting trip through Wuhan with a 3-hour layover. I didn’t want to drag a suitcase through the station. I shipped it from my hotel to the Wuhan station, and it was waiting for me at the luggage office when I arrived.
The service isn’t free. Prices vary by distance and weight, but it’s usually reasonable — think 30-60 RMB for a standard suitcase within the same city. The main downside is that not all stations participate, so you need to check coverage before relying on it.
Verdict: Useful for multi-city trips or when you have a heavy bag and a tight connection.
You can now book pet transport on select high-speed trains through the 12306 app.
As of April 2025, 121 stations and 228 trains offer pet transport. Look for trains marked with a “宠” (pet) icon. You can book a ticket for yourself and reserve a pet transport slot on the same train.
The process works like this: search for your route, find a train with the pet icon, and book your ticket. During the booking process, you’ll see an option to add pet transport. Each passenger can bring up to two pets that meet the railway’s requirements (usually small dogs and cats in approved carriers).
I haven’t used this myself — I don’t travel with a pet — but I’ve seen it work for others. A friend took her cat from Beijing to Xi’an this way. She said the process was straightforward, though she had to arrive at the station 30 minutes early to drop off the carrier at the designated area.
Verdict: A genuine option for pet owners. Just check the pet policy carefully — not all animals are allowed.
You can generate a digital temporary ID through the 12306 app in under a minute.
This is the feature I’ve used most. I’ve forgotten my ID twice in the last year. Both times, I was standing at the station entrance, panicking. Both times, the app saved me.
Open 12306, go to “Warm Services” (温馨服务) on the home screen, and select “Temporary Passenger ID.” Fill in your name and ID number, complete a quick face scan, and the system generates a digital ID. It’s valid for 24 hours and can be used for both entry and boarding.
There are limits: you can apply up to six times per month. And it only works if you already have a verified 12306 account. If you’re a foreign traveler, this feature may not work the same way — you’ll likely need to visit the station’s police counter for a paper temporary ID.
Verdict: A lifesaver for domestic travelers. Foreign travelers should still carry their passport.
You can report lost items through the 12306 app and track the search progress.
I left a jacket on a train from Nanjing to Shanghai. I didn’t realize until I was already through the exit gate. I opened the 12306 app, went to “Warm Services,” and selected “Lost Item Search.” I filled in my train number, seat, and a description of the jacket.
Two days later, I got a notification. The jacket had been found and was at the Shanghai station lost-and-found office. I picked it up the next day.
The system works well for items left on trains or in stations. You can track the search progress in the app. Response time varies — some items are found within hours, others take days. The key is to report quickly, before the train is cleaned and the item is moved to a central office.
Verdict: Reliable for most items. Report within 24 hours for the best chance of recovery.
Here are a few things I learned that aren’t obvious from the app interface:
