Mount Emei rewards preparation and punishes impulse. Pick the wrong route and you can spend half your day on buses and in queues — or reach Golden Summit after the best light is gone. For most first-time visitors, two days is the sweet spot. This guide compares four practical routes by time, fitness and budget, with the 2026 reservation rules that now matter more than ever.
For most first-time visitors, choose the 2-Day Classic Route: travel to Leidongping on Day 1, stay overnight, then reach Golden Summit for sunrise on Day 2 before exploring the mid-mountain zone.
Choose the 1-Day Express Route only if Golden Summit is your sole priority. You will miss sunrise and most mid-mountain temples.
Choose the 2-Day Hiking Route only if you regularly hike steep mountain terrain.
For families, older travelers or anyone who does not care about reaching the summit, the Low-Mountain Leisure Route gives you forests and temples without the high-altitude rush.
| Route | Time | Fitness | Approx. Budget | Core Experience | Best For | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-Day Express | 1 day | Low–Medium | ~¥800 | Golden Summit | Tight schedules | No sunrise or mid-mountain |
| 2-Day Classic | 2 days | Medium | ~¥1,200 | Sunrise + Golden Summit + mid-mountain | Most first-time visitors | Requires overnight stay |
| 2-Day Hike | 2 days | Very high | ~¥1,000 | Mountain trail + temples + summit | Experienced hikers | Serious physical strain |
| Low-Mountain Leisure | Half/full day | Low | ~¥600 | Forests + temples + lower mountain | Families & casual visitors | No Golden Summit |
| 3-Day Deep Hike | 3 days | Very high | ~¥1,500 | Full mountain immersion | Experienced trekkers | High time and fitness cost |
Budget estimates above assume peak-season pricing. In low season (December 15–January 15), the Golden Summit cable car drops to ¥30 up / ¥20 down, reducing the 1-Day Express cost to roughly ¥700.

The biggest change in 2026 is not the route itself — it is capacity management. High-mountain buses now use timed reservations, while construction around Leidongping and the Golden Summit cable car has reduced transport capacity. Since May 23, Golden Summit admission has been capped at 8,000 visitors per day.
Mount Emei's cost has three main layers: the scenic-area admission ticket, sightseeing buses and cable cars.
As of September 2026, the official published full-price admission is:
| Ticket | Peak Season | Low Season |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Emei scenic-area admission | CNY (¥160) | ¥110 |
| Golden Summit cable car — up | ¥65 | ¥30 |
| Golden Summit cable car — down | ¥55 | ¥20 |
| Wannian cable car — up | ¥65 | ¥30 |
| Wannian cable car — down | ¥45 | ¥20 |
The official 2026 fee schedule confirms the ¥160/¥110 scenic-area admission, Golden Summit cable-car prices of ¥65 up / ¥55 down in peak season and ¥30 up / ¥20 down in low season, and Wannian cable-car prices of ¥65 up / ¥45 down in peak season and ¥30 up / ¥20 down in low season.
Always verify cable-car prices on the official site before your trip, as rates and temporary operating arrangements may be adjusted.
The full-mountain round-trip sightseeing bus ticket is ¥90. Shorter one-way or segmented bus tickets are available at lower prices, so only buy the full ¥90 round-trip ticket if your itinerary covers the broader base ↔ Leidongping transport network.
Yes — but the precise wording matters.
As of January 1, 2026, more than 20 temples across Mount Emei, including Baoguo Temple, Wannian Temple and Fuhu Temple, permanently waived their separate “incense ticket” (香花券) admission fees.
That means you no longer pay an additional temple admission charge at these participating temples after entering the relevant scenic area.
This is particularly useful on the low-mountain and hiking routes, where you may pass several temples in one day.
Do not assume that an individual foreign passport automatically gives you a half-price ticket.
The official 2026 policy applies specifically to organized inbound tour groups, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan groups, not to individual foreign passport holders. Under the “引团入峨” program, qualifying groups receive 50% off the full-price adult ticket from January 16 through December 14, 2026.
Independent foreign travelers should therefore budget for the normal applicable ticket unless the official booking platform shows a concession for their document type.
This is the update most older Mount Emei guides are missing.
Construction is underway around the Leidongping parking/transport area, while the Golden Summit cable-car system is undergoing a major upgrade. The scenic area remains open, and the cable car continues operating, but both high-mountain bus and cable-car capacity have been reduced. The projects are expected to continue into 2027.
Since May 23, 2026:
The old Leidongping station building can no longer be used for overnight waiting or rest during construction. If you stay around Leidongping for sunrise, use an actual guesthouse rather than planning to wait overnight inside the station.
Do not treat a sold-out high-mountain bus as a minor inconvenience. It can break a one-day itinerary completely.
Yes.
Since March 10, 2026, sightseeing buses toward Leidongping/Golden Summit use real-name timed reservations. Reservations are mandatory for these high-mountain bus tickets; book your time slot before relying on the bus for your itinerary.
You choose a departure period when booking through the official WeChat account, the “峨眉山旅游官方平台” mini-program or an authorized platform.
The important details are unusually strict:
Passports are explicitly listed as valid identification for the pre-check process. Your booking document and the document you present at the bus checkpoint must match.
For this reason, I would book the high-mountain bus before building train and hotel timing around it. If you are arriving by train from Chengdu, leave at least an hour of practical buffer rather than booking a bus slot immediately after your scheduled train arrival.
Book via the Mount Emei Official Tourism Platform, and never buy tickets from street vendors near train stations or visitor centers.
Take a high-speed train to Emeishan Railway Station (峨眉山站).
Do not accidentally book Emei Railway Station (峨眉站). They are different stations, and the latter is much less convenient for the scenic area.
High-speed trains depart regularly from Chengdu East, Chengdu South, Chengdu West and Shuangliu Airport Railway Station. The journey typically takes around 1–1.5 hours, depending on the service.
If this is your first Chinese high-speed train trip, read the China High-Speed Train Guide for Foreign Visitors before departure. For ticket platforms and passport booking, the 12306 Train Ticket Booking Guide for Foreigners covers the practical differences.
From Emeishan Railway Station, local buses, taxis and scenic transport connect toward the Baoguo Temple/Huangwan visitor area.
If you are starting early from central Chengdu, the Chengdu Metro Guide for Foreign Tourists can help you plan the first leg to the railway station.
Private vehicles cannot simply drive all the way to Golden Summit.
Traffic controls apply above the permitted parking areas, and high-mountain access ultimately depends on scenic transport. Winter snow, holidays and temporary traffic controls can further restrict private vehicles.
If you self-drive, check the latest traffic notice rather than assuming you can reach the same point year-round.
Think of the mountain as three layers:
Sightseeing bus → cable car → walking
The sightseeing bus does the heavy lifting between the base and high-mountain zones. The Golden Summit cable car then saves a steep climb between Jieyin Hall and the summit area.
Even with both, Mount Emei is not a quick “ride up, take a photo, ride down” attraction.
From the base to Golden Summit, allow roughly 2.5–3 hours one way once bus travel, walking, transfers and normal waiting are included. In busy periods, construction-related queues can make it longer.
As of September 2026, the official construction notice does not guarantee a fixed queue time. Build a buffer into your itinerary rather than relying on an exact “40-minute” or “60-minute” estimate.
It works — but only if you understand what you are giving up.
Route: Baoguo Temple/Huangwan → sightseeing bus → Leidongping → walk approximately 1.5 km to Jieyin Hall → Golden Summit cable car → Golden Summit → return the same way.
Allow 8–10 hours for the mountain itself.
This route is for travelers with only one day who mainly want to see the ten-faced Samantabhadra statue, Golden Hall and — if weather cooperates — the sea of clouds.
What you miss matters: sunrise, Qingyin Pavilion, the monkey area, Wannian Temple and most of Mount Emei's forest and Buddhist atmosphere.
There is also one uncomfortable truth: if Golden Summit disappears into fog, you have spent most of the day getting to and from one viewpoint.
Choose this route only when the alternative is not visiting Mount Emei at all.
Because it solves the mountain's biggest logistical problem: distance.
Take the train from Chengdu to Emeishan Station, continue to the scenic area, then use your reserved sightseeing-bus slot to reach the high-mountain zone.
Stay overnight around Leidongping.
Do not over-plan Day 1. The purpose is to put yourself close enough to Golden Summit that you are not racing several hours of transport before sunrise.
Wake early, walk toward Jieyin Hall and use the cable car to reach Golden Summit.
After sunrise, explore the summit area before descending. If transport timing and energy allow, continue into the mid-mountain zone around Wannian Temple or Qingyin Pavilion rather than heading directly back to Chengdu.
That second half is what makes the 2-day route feel like Mount Emei rather than simply a Golden Summit excursion.
Almost every first-time visitor who has two days.
You get the sunrise opportunity, the summit, Buddhist culture and at least some of the forest landscape without forcing your knees through a full mountain hike.
Budget roughly ¥1,200 per person as a planning figure, but hotel rates and food can move the total substantially.
Only if you already know what a long mountain day feels like.
Day 1: Baoguo Temple → Qingyin Pavilion → Yixiantian → monkey area → Hongchunping → Ninety-Nine Turns → Xixiangchi
Day 2: Xixiangchi → Leidongping → Jieyin Hall → Golden Summit
The route involves relentless stone steps and major elevation gain. It is not a casual alternative for travelers who simply dislike cable cars.
The Ninety-Nine Turns section is where confidence tends to disappear — Mount Emei's stone steps will humble anyone who talks tough.
If you have knee problems, this is the wrong route. Hiking poles and knee support are more useful here than another pair of fashionable trail shoes.
Stay low.
A practical low-mountain sequence is:
Baoguo Temple → Fuhu Temple → Leiyin Temple → Chunyang Hall → Shenshui Pavilion → Zhongfeng Temple → Wuxian'gang.
This forest-and-temple route gives you a very different Mount Emei from Golden Summit. It is greener, quieter and less dependent on cable cars and high-altitude transport.
With more than 20 temples now free of separate incense-ticket charges, this style of visit has become even easier in 2026.
You miss Golden Summit and the sea of clouds completely — but that may be a perfectly reasonable trade if you are traveling with children, older relatives or someone who does not enjoy altitude and queues.
This is also the easiest route to combine with another Sichuan stop. If Leshan is next, use the Leshan Giant Buddha Visitor Guide to decide whether to climb or take the boat.
Your hotel choice comes down to one question:
How much inconvenience are you willing to accept before sunrise?
| Area | Typical Price | Best For | Sunrise Convenience | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leidongping | ~¥100–150/person for basic rooms | Value | Good | Early wake-up + cable-car queue |
| Golden Summit | ¥500+/person | Maximum convenience | Excellent | Expensive, limited inventory |
| Baoguo Temple/base | ~¥100–300/room | Budget & food | Poor | Too far for practical sunrise access |
| Xixiangchi | ~¥50/person basic monastery-style lodging | Hikers | Hiking route only | Very basic facilities |
For most sunrise travelers, yes.
It is much cheaper than sleeping at Golden Summit while still putting you close enough for an early ascent.
Facilities can be basic, and English service should not be assumed. Bring your original passport for hotel registration and keep your booking confirmation available.
If you are unsure how foreign-guest hotel registration works in China, see the Hotel Booking & Registration Guide for Foreigners in China.
It is the easiest option if sunrise matters more than budget.
You avoid the first-morning transfer from Leidongping and can walk to the viewing area. The downside is obvious: prices rise sharply and rooms sell quickly during holidays and good-weather periods.
Yes for food, budget and an easy arrival day. No for sunrise.
The Baoguo Temple area has far more accommodation and dining choice, but you are simply too far below the summit to treat it as a convenient sunrise base.
April and May bring rhododendrons and relatively comfortable temperatures at lower elevations.
It is one of the better periods for travelers who care more about hiking than snow scenery.
June through August is green, cool at altitude and busy.
Golden Summit can feel dramatically cooler than Chengdu, but summer also brings rain, cloud and reduced visibility. Combine that with the current construction-related capacity limits and you should expect more waiting on busy dates.
Before choosing a Chinese holiday or summer weekend, check the Best Time to Travel in Mainland China.
September through November is one of the strongest periods for combining hiking, clearer weather and autumn scenery.
That does not mean Golden Summit will be clear on your day. Mountain weather remains unpredictable.
Yes, if you are prepared for cold.
Snow-covered temples, frost and cloud layers can make winter the mountain's most dramatic season. Golden Summit sits at 3,079 meters, and temperatures can fall far below those at the base.
The scenic-area low-season admission also drops from ¥160 to ¥110 between December 15 and January 15.
| Traveler / Scenario | Best Route | Why It Fits | Alternative | Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First visit, 2 days | 2-Day Classic | Sunrise + summit + mid-mountain without extreme hiking | 1-Day Express | Requires overnight stay |
| Only 1 day | 1-Day Express | Fastest practical summit-focused route | 2-Day Classic | No sunrise; little mid-mountain time |
| Strong hiker | 2-Day Hike | Forest trails, temples and summit | 3-Day Deep Hike | Major physical strain |
| Family / older travelers | Low-Mountain Leisure | Lower altitude, temples and forest | Short summit trip | Misses Golden Summit |
| Experienced trekker, 3 days | 3-Day Deep Hike | Deepest mountain experience | 2-Day Hike | Highest time and fitness demand |
These budget estimates assume peak-season pricing. During the December 15–January 15 low season, lower admission and Golden Summit cable-car fares can reduce the cost of a summit-focused trip.
Because the mountain is much larger than the map makes it look.
Even with buses and cable cars, getting from the base to Golden Summit can consume most of the morning. Arriving late leaves little margin for queues, weather or a missed transport slot.
Treat them as wild animals, not photo props.
Do not hold food, snacks or bottled water in your hands when walking through the monkey zone. Monkeys are attracted to visible plastic bags, bottles and small pouches, so keep loose items fully zipped inside your backpack.
Do not feed them or try to retrieve an object by fighting with one. If there is a problem, move away and ask scenic-area staff for help.
Often dramatically colder.
A temperature difference of roughly 10–15°C is possible between lower areas and the 3,079-meter summit. Even in summer, carry a windproof layer; in winter, proper cold-weather clothing is essential.
Because Emeishan Station (峨眉山站) and Emei Station (峨眉站) are not interchangeable.
For most foreign visitors arriving by high-speed rail, Emeishan Station is the useful station for the scenic area. Check the Chinese characters before confirming the ticket.
Ignore unofficial “fast-track” sellers and anyone promising secret access to Golden Summit.
Use the official platform or an authorized booking channel. The 2026 high-mountain bus system checks the reservation against a valid document, including passports, so an unofficial promise cannot bypass capacity controls.
If you are new to Chinese mobile payments, set up a reliable option before leaving Chengdu; the China Payment Guide for Foreign Visitors: Alipay, WeChat Pay & Cash covers the practical options.
Mount Emei is not a mountain I would “figure out when I get there.”
The bus ride is long. The summit has a daily capacity limit. High-mountain bus tickets now have timed slots. Construction has reduced transport capacity. And mountain weather can turn the view you planned your day around into a wall of white.
The real decision is not whether Mount Emei is worth visiting. It is which Mount Emei you want to experience.
One day gives you the summit.
Two days give you the mountain.
For most first-time visitors, that is why the 2-Day Classic remains the most practical route.
If Mount Emei is one part of a longer Sichuan trip, the Complete Chengdu Travel Hub can help connect it with Chengdu, Leshan and other nearby destinations.
This article is part of the Chengdu Travel Guide Hub.
Foreign visitors can use passports to reserve Mount Emei products through supported official and authorized booking channels. The scenic area confirmed in 2026 that its upgraded ticketing system supports passport reservations and passport scanning for entry. Keep the original passport used for the booking with you.
Early morning after unsettled or humid weather can produce dramatic cloud layers, but there is no season or hour that guarantees them. Autumn and winter are popular for clearer summit conditions; check the mountain forecast and live conditions rather than planning the entire trip around a guaranteed sea of clouds.
Yes. The scenic area remains open and the Golden Summit cable car continues operating during the upgrade, but its transport capacity has been reduced. Construction is expected to continue into 2027, so allow extra time on busy days.
English support is improving but is not uniform across the mountain. Official reporting in 2026 noted multilingual translation screens and digital translation services, while remote temple and hiking areas may still have limited English information. Keep a translation app available offline.
Do not assume so based only on age. I could not verify a current official 2026 rule establishing blanket free scenic-area admission for every visitor aged 65+ using an ordinary foreign passport. Check the concession shown for your passport type in the official booking system or confirm with the scenic area's ticket service before relying on a senior discount.
Not freely. Mount Emei is designated controlled airspace, and since April 2026 non-commercial drone operations must follow the approval result issued through China's UOM civil-drone management platform. Do not launch a drone simply because you see an open viewpoint.
Treat the Golden Summit admission quota and high-mountain sightseeing-bus reservation as separate availability constraints and coordinate them carefully. Before committing to your transport timing, confirm that the Golden Summit product you need and a suitable bus time slot are both available on the official platform.
You cannot simply enter the boarding area using the missed time slot. The official rules allow you to change to a later slot if capacity remains; if all later slots are full, affected passengers may undergo ticket inspection after 14:00 on the same day. Leave at least an hour of practical buffer between your scheduled train arrival and high-mountain bus reservation.
Hiking poles are useful on the long stair-heavy hiking routes, especially around steep sections such as Ninety-Nine Turns. Keep your equipment compact around temples, cable cars and crowded transport areas, and follow any on-site restrictions applying to specific buildings or facilities.
Golden Summit sits at 3,079 meters. Most visitors do not develop serious altitude illness, but some may notice headache, dizziness, fatigue or shortness of breath. Take it easy after reaching the summit; if symptoms become significant or worsen, descend and seek medical help rather than continuing strenuous activity.

Updated September 2026. Ticket prices, temple incense-ticket abolition, Golden Summit daily visitor cap, passport-enabled reservations and high-mountain bus timed booking rules were cross-verified against Mount Emei Scenic Area Administration, Leshan municipal government and People's Daily Sichuan official releases. Where official documentation did not confirm universal discounts for individual foreign passport holders, including a 50% scenic ticket discount or blanket 65+ senior free admission, this guide avoids making unsubstantiated guarantees. Real-time queues, weather visibility and temporary traffic controls can change; confirm current status before arrival.
