My first trip to Chongqing was full of blunders. I arrived at Hongya Cave too early, wasted money on a useless fast pass, and suffered from overly spicy hotpot. I took the wrong trail route, overpaid for drinks, and got stuck in traffic on a short walkable trip.I was just an inexperienced tourist making typical mistakes.
Chongqing favors well-planned visits and surprises casual travelers. Once you avoid common pitfalls, you’ll fall for its delicious food, stunning night scenery and friendly locals. Here are my hard-earned tips for your smoother journey.
Direct answer: Hongya Cave is free to enter, and the best view is from Qiansimen Bridge, not from inside the building.Hongya Cave is Chongqing’s most famous night attraction, and it is also where the most scams happen. The building itself is a shopping mall during the day. The magic only starts after 7:30pm when the lights come on.
The most common scam: someone near the entrance on the 11th floor offers to take you down via a “fast pass” for 10 yuan. They lead you to a free elevator or stairwell. You pay 10 yuan for something everyone can do for free. This happens dozens of times every evening.
The better approach: Enter from the 11th floor (the Jiefangbei side) and walk down the stairs to the 1st floor. Or use the Daijiaxiang tunnel, a air-raid shelter converted into a walking path, which gives you a quieter route down with better views.
Best photo spot: Walk onto Qiansimen Bridge. The midpoint of the bridge gives you the classic full-view shot of Hongya Cave with the Jialing River in the foreground. Go between 7:30pm and 9pm for the best lighting.
The inside of Hongya Cave is crowded, loud, and full of overpriced shops. You do not need to go inside. The exterior view from the bridge is the real experience.
Direct answer: Chongqing’s “mild” is equivalent to “medium” in most other Chinese cities. Order “extra mild” or a yuanyang (鸳鸯锅) split pot. This is the mistake I made, and I paid for it with 45 minutes of regret. Chongqing hotpot uses beef tallow (牛油) as the base, which holds heat and spice differently than the vegetable oil-based broths used elsewhere in China.
This is the mistake I made, and I paid for it with 45 minutes of regret. Chongqing hotpot uses beef tallow (牛油) as the base, which holds heat and spice differently than the vegetable oil-based broths used elsewhere in China.
The real scale:
The correct dipping sauce: Only two ingredients, sesame oil (香油) and minced garlic (蒜泥). If a hotpot restaurant offers you sesame paste (麻酱), it is not authentic Chongqing hotpot.
Where to eat: Skip the restaurants near Hongya Cave or Jiefangbei. Walk 10 minutes into a residential area. Look for places with a queue of locals and a rating above 4.5 on Dianping (大众点评). Good options include Dàlóng Huǒguō (大龙火锅) in Shapingba and Zhào’èr Huǒguō (赵二火锅) in Yuzhong District.
What to order: Mao肚 (beef tripe), yācháng (duck intestine), huánghóu (yellow throat), and nèn niúròu (tender beef). Each cooks in seconds, tripe needs about 15 seconds, duck intestine about 10.
Direct answer: Start at Qixingang Station Exit 1, walk to Lingshixiang (领事巷), and follow the trail downhill. The opposite direction is exhausting. The Shancheng Trail (山城步道) is one of Chongqing’s best walking experiences, a cliffside path with views of the Yangtze River, old residential buildings, and small shops tucked into the hillside. But the direction matters more than most guides admit.
The correct route: Take Metro Line 1 to Qixingang Station (七星岗站), Exit 1. Walk to Lingshixiang (领事巷). From there, the trail goes downhill all the way. You will pass the Rén’ài Táng (仁爱堂) ruins, the Shíguānglǐ Library (时光里图书馆), and several viewpoints over the river.
What happens if you do it backwards: You start at the bottom and walk uphill for 40 minutes. By the time you reach the top, you are too tired to enjoy the views. I did this. I do not recommend it.
Time needed: About 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace. The trail ends near the Shíbā Tī (十八梯) area, which you can explore next.
📍 Open in Amap — 领事巷 (Lingshi Alley)📍 Open in Amap — 时光里图书馆 (Shiguanli Library)Direct answer: The cable car ride itself is 5 minutes. If the queue exceeds 30 minutes, skip it and photograph it from Báixiàng Jū (白象居) instead.
The Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道) is a genuine Chongqing experience, a cable car that crosses the Yangtze River, offering views of the city skyline and the river below. But it has become so popular that queues can exceed 90 minutes during peak times.
The smarter approach:
The alternative: If the queue is too long, go to Báixiàng Jū (白象居), an old residential building complex. The corridor between Building 3 and Building 4 offers a perfect view of the cable car passing between buildings, with the Raffles City (来福士) building in the background. This is where photographers go. It is free.
Cost: 20 yuan one way, 30 yuan round trip. Not worth the round trip, you see the same view twice.
Direct answer: Skip Ciqikou’s main street on weekends. The side alleys offer better food, fewer crowds, and more authentic experiences.
Ciqikou (磁器口古镇) is a 1,000-year-old town that has become a tourist magnet. The main street is packed shoulder-to-shoulder on weekends, with identical souvenir shops and mediocre food stalls.
What locals do: Turn into the side alleys. The back streets have older buildings, quieter tea houses, and food stalls that serve the same dishes at half the price. The Chén Máhuā (陈麻花), a twisted fried dough snack, costs 15-20 yuan per bag in the side streets versus 30-50 yuan on the main street.
Best time to go: Before 10am on a weekday. The crowds arrive around 11am.
What to eat: Máxuèwàng (毛血旺), a spicy blood curd and tripe stew, and handmade cíbā (糍粑), a glutinous rice cake.
📍 Open in Amap — 磁器口 (Ciqikou)Direct answer: The official viewing platform is the only safe and clear spot to photograph the train passing through the building. Do not stand on the road.
Liziba Station (李子坝站) is the famous “light rail through a building” spot. The train passes through the 6th to 8th floors of a residential building. It is worth seeing once.
The problem: Tourists stand on the road to get photos. This is dangerous and blocks traffic. The official viewing platform is free and gives you a clear, unobstructed view.
A better experience: Ride Line 2 from the front of the train. The driver’s perspective through the windshield gives you the feeling of entering the building. Get off at Liziba, take your photo from the platform, then continue to the next stop.
Time needed: 20 minutes max. This is a photo stop, not a half-day activity.

Jiefangbei (解放碑): The central area. Walking distance to Hongya Cave, the Yangtze River Cableway, and Báxiàng Jū. Metro access is excellent. Prices range from 200-400 yuan per night for a decent hotel. The downside: it is busy and can be noisy.
Guanyinqiao (观音桥): The local shopping and nightlife hub. More affordable than Jiefangbei (200-300 yuan per night), with better food options and a younger crowd. The “Wǒ Zài Chóngqìng” (我在重庆) sign is here.
Nanbin Road (南滨路): Quieter, with views of the Yuzhong Peninsula skyline. Good for couples or travelers who prefer calm. The trade-off: you need to take a taxi or metro to reach most attractions.
Where not to stay: Near Chongqing North Station (重庆北站) or Chongqing West Station (重庆西站). These are transport hubs with little atmosphere. You will spend time and money commuting to the interesting parts of the city.

Taxis get stuck in traffic.Chongqing’s metro system is modern, clean, and efficient. A single ride costs 2-8 yuan. You can use Alipay or WeChat to scan the QR code at the gate.
Key stations to remember:
When to avoid the metro: Peak hours (7:30-9am and 5:30-7pm). The trains are crowded. Plan your day to start after 9am.

Chongqing’s terrain is unlike any other Chinese city. Buildings are built on hillsides. The “1st floor” of one building might be the “8th floor” of the building next door. Your phone’s GPS struggles with this.
What actually works:
A real example: I once stood at what my map said was the entrance to a restaurant. I was on the wrong level. The restaurant was above me, accessible by a staircase I could not see from my position. A local woman noticed my confusion, pointed to the stairs, and waited until I found the right door.
Direct answer: Yes. Chongqing is one of the safest large cities in China for solo travelers, including women traveling alone.
Chongqing has a high police presence, well-lit streets, and a nightlife culture that is lively but not dangerous. The main risk is pickpocketing in crowded areas, keep your phone and wallet in front pockets or a cross-body bag.
What solo travelers should know:
The real challenge: Loneliness, not safety. Chongqing is a social city. If you feel isolated, sit at a communal table in a hotpot restaurant or join a free walking tour. The locals are talkative.
Direct answer: A 3-day solo trip costs 500-800 yuan on a budget or 1,000-1,700 yuan for comfort.
Budget breakdown (3 days, 2 nights):
| Item | Budget | Comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (2 nights) | 160-300 yuan | 400-800 yuan |
| Food (6-8 meals) | 180-250 yuan | 350-500 yuan |
| Transport (metro) | 60-90 yuan | 100-150 yuan |
| Attractions (mostly free) | 20-50 yuan | 50-150 yuan |
| Snacks/souvenirs | 50-100 yuan | 100-200 yuan |
| Total | 500-800 yuan | 1,000-1,700 yuan |
The three money-saving rules: Stay in a budget hotel or hostel dorm. Eat outside tourist zones. Use the metro for everything.
Direct answer: March to May and September to November are the best times. July and August are brutally hot.
Seasonal breakdown:
| Season | Temperature | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar-May) | 15-25°C | Best. Comfortable, clear skies. |
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | 35-42°C | Avoid. Chongqing is one of China’s “three furnaces.” |
| Autumn (Sep-Nov) | 18-28°C | Excellent. Cooler, still pleasant. |
| Winter (Dec-Feb) | 5-12°C | OK. Foggy and damp, but atmospheric. |
The summer reality: I visited in July once. The heat is oppressive. You will sweat through your clothes within 10 minutes of being outside. Air conditioning is everywhere, shops, metro, hotels, but walking between them is miserable. If you must go in summer, plan indoor activities for midday and go out only in the morning and evening.
Direct answer: Yes, but it requires a full day. The Tian Sheng San Qiao (天生三桥) natural bridges are genuinely impressive.
Wulong (武隆) is about 2.5 hours from downtown Chongqing. The main attraction is the Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥), a series of massive stone arches formed by erosion over millions of years. It was a filming location for Curse of the Golden Flower.
How to get there:
What to expect: You walk down into the canyon via an elevator (80 meters vertical drop), then walk about 3 kilometers along a flat path through the gorge. The scale is impressive, the bridges are 200-300 meters high.
Cost: About 125 yuan for the entrance ticket plus 40 yuan for the sightseeing bus.
Trade-off: It is a long day. You leave around 7am and return around 7pm. If you only have 3 days in Chongqing, skip Wulong and focus on the city. If you have 4-5 days, it is worth it.
